Jack Tramiel fu il creatore del Commodore 64, computer che negli anni ’80 e ’90 ha avuto un ruolo da protagonista nel compito di informatizzare mezzo mondo.

“Tramiel nacque nel 1928 a Łódź, Polonia. Dopo l’invasione nazista nel 1939, la sua famiglia fu trasportata nel ghetto a Łódź, dove lui lavorò in una fabbrica di pantaloni. Quando i ghetti furono liquidati, la sua famiglia fu mandata nel campo di concentramento di Auschwitz. Fu esaminato dal dottor Josef Mengele e scelto per una squadra di lavoro, dopodiché lui e suo padre furono mandati al campo di lavoro Alum vicino ad Hannover, mentre sua madre restò ad Auschwitz. Suo padre morì di tifo nel campo di lavoro come molti altri, anche se Tramiel ha sempre creduto che fosse stato ucciso con un’iniezione di gasolio. Tramiel fu salvato nell’aprile del 1945 dagli americani.
Nel novembre del 1947, Tramiel emigrò negli Stati Uniti e si arruolò nell’esercito dove imparò a riparare strumenti da ufficio, come le macchine da scrivere. Nel 1953, lavorando come tassista, comprò un negozio di riparazioni nel Bronx, chiamandolo Commodore Portable Typewriter Company. Scelse “commodore” (in italiano “commodoro”) perché voleva un nome che avesse affinità con il mondo militare e perché gli altri gradi alti della gerarchia militare, come ammiraglio o generale, erano già stati presi da altre compagnie. La società divenne distributrice per il Nord-America delle calcolatrici italiane Everest[1][2]. Successivamente, strinse un accordo commerciale con una ditta cecoslovacca che costruiva le macchine per scrivere che poi la Commodore rivendeva negli Stati Uniti. Ma dato che la Cecoslovacchia era uno stato membro del Patto di Varsavia, Tramiel dovette trasferirsi in Canada per aggirare le restrizioni sulle importazioni vigenti negli USA. Fondò quindi la Commodore Business Machines con sede a Toronto.
Per aiutare la sua nuova società scelse un finanziatore, C. Powell Morgan, capo della Atlantic Acceptance Company. Nel 1962 la Commodore fu quotata in borsa, collocando le proprie azioni a 2,50 dollari l’una. Nel 1965 la Atlantic fallì e Morgan fu accusato dal Governo Canadese di frode finanziaria, uso illecito di società di comodo e valori gonfiati di azioni. Tramiel fu sospettato di complicità ma non fu mai incriminato per tali reati.
Nel 1966 Tramiel decise di cedere il 17% della Commodore ad un nuovo investitore, Irving Gould. L’operazione portò nelle casse della società 400.000 dollari, che furono investiti per introdurre la società nel mercato delle calcolatrici meccaniche.
Alla fine degli anni sessanta i giapponesi cominciarono a costruire calcolatrici meccaniche a basso costo, portando via fette di mercato alla Commodore. Gould convinse Tramiel ad un viaggio direttamente in Giappone per scoprire il modo di competere con loro ma, durante la sua visita, vide che i costruttori asiatici stavano spostando il proprio interesse verso le calcolatrici elettroniche e che, quindi, le calcolatrici meccaniche avevano ormai fatto il loro tempo.”
